Extending the life of 18650 batteries

I needed to learn how to get the extend the life of my 18650 batteries. This came about after I bought and electric moped that came with no batteries so I need to build a battery pack.

I have been doing heaps of research on the best ways to arrange batteries and the best voltages to use to charge and discharge packs to make them last ages. As I found out, if you go from 100% to 0% and back again you will get about 500 cycles. If you go from 0% and only charge to 70% you can get 5,000 cycles out of your battery.   • Cycling from 100 to 0 % we get 500 cycles
  • Cycling from 100 to 10 % we get 500 cycles
  • Cycling from 100 to 20 % we get 1.000 cycles
  • Cycling from 90 to 0 % we get 1.500 cycles
  • Cycling from 90 to 10 % we get 1.500 cycles
  • Cycling from 90 to 20 % we get 2.000 cycles
  • Cycling from 80 to 0 % we get 3.000 cycles
  • Cycling from 80 to 10 % we get 3.000 cycles
  • Cycling from 80 to 20 % we get 3.500 cycles
  • Cycling from 70 to 0 % we get 5.000 cycles
  • Cycling from 70 to 10 % we get 5.500 cycles
  • Cycling from 70 to 20 % we get 6.000 cycles

I am currently using NCR18650B batteries. Below is a rough chart to show the voltage compared to SOC (State of Charge)
